But If You Do Not Forgive

But if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Matthew 6:15
These are sobering words.
Jesus doesn’t leave room for excuses or exceptions. Forgiveness is not just a suggestion—it’s a command with eternal implications. If we refuse to forgive others, we cut ourselves off from the very grace we so desperately need.
Why such strong language? Because unforgiveness is a heart issue. It reveals pride, self-righteousness, or deep hurt left unaddressed.
When we hold onto offense, we build a wall that blocks intimacy with God. The Lord wants to tear down that wall—not to shame us, but to set us free.
This verse isn’t about earning forgiveness—it’s about showing it. When we truly encounter God’s mercy, we become more merciful.
A forgiven heart turns into a forgiving heart. If we’re unwilling to forgive, it might be time to revisit the cross and remember the cost of our own pardon.
Jesus calls us to forgive because He knows it’s the only way to find peace. Forgiveness doesn’t excuse the wrongdoing—it frees us from the burden and hands it over to God, who judges righteously.
Life Application:
Take a moment to examine your heart. Are you holding onto unforgiveness? Ask God for the courage and strength to release it. Forgiveness is the path to freedom and closer fellowship with your Father.
Call to Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
I don’t want anything to hinder my walk with You. Lord Jesus, I come before You to ask for Your help in releasing every grudge and choosing the way of love, grace, and forgiveness.
Lord, I ask that You teach me to forgive fully and freely, just as You have forgiven me.
Lord Jesus, I also ask You to heal every wound and restore my joy.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
