Forgive Us Our Debts

“And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.”
Matthew 6:12
This verse is a heart-level reminder that forgiveness is at the core of our relationship with God—and with others.
Jesus teaches us to seek God’s forgiveness daily, not out of guilt, but out of a desire to walk in freedom and intimacy with Him. Our “debts” are the sins, failures, and shortcomings that separate us from God’s holiness.
But the good news of the gospel is this: through Jesus, forgiveness is freely available. When we confess our sins, He is faithful to cleanse and restore us (1 John 1:9).
We don’t carry the weight of shame—we come boldly to our merciful Father, knowing His grace is greater than our guilt.
But forgiveness isn’t just something we receive; it’s something we give.
“As we also have forgiven” shifts the focus to our relationships with others. Jesus links the forgiveness we ask for with the forgiveness we offer. Bitterness, resentment, and unforgiveness can block our prayers and harden our hearts. When we release others, we step into the freedom we’ve been given.
Life Application:
Ask God to search your heart today. Is there someone you need to forgive? Or a burden of guilt you need to surrender? Don’t wait—confess and forgive. Be free from harboring unforgiveness and then experience God’s grace flow freely.
Call to Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for forgiving me again and again. Help me to forgive others as You have forgiven me.
Lord Jesus, I release every offense and trust You to heal what has been broken. I ask that you use my life to reflect the mercy I’ve received.
In Jesus Name, Amen.
