Lead Us Not into Temptation

August 29, 2025
“And lead us not into temptation.”
Matthew 6:13a

This part of the Lord's Prayer is a plea for protection, not because God tempts us (James 1:13 assures us He does not), but because we recognize our weakness and need His guidance.

It's a humble plea: Heavenly Father, don't let me enter situations that make it easy for me to fall.

Yes, temptation is part of life and often catches us unaware.

Pride, anger, lust, fear, doubt—whatever it may be—we all face moments when our faith is tested and our desires are challenged. We can learn from Jesus' teachings that we should be proactive in prayer, asking God not to let us slip and fall, but to guide us along a better path.

This prayer reminds us that the Christian life isn't lived in our own strength. We need the Spirit to guide our steps, guard our hearts, and grant us discernment. Temptation loses its hold when we walk closely with the Lord and choose daily surrender over self-reliance.

Praying "lead us not" also invites obedience. It's saying, "Lord, I want to follow where You lead, not where my flesh pulls." God is faithful to provide a way out whenever we're tempted (1 Corinthians 10:13), and He gives us wisdom to notice danger before it captures us.

Life Application:

Be alert today. Ask the Holy Spirit to make you aware of the snares of temptation and choose the path of righteousness. Beloved, make the decision that you will stay close to the Shepherd, for His way always leads to life.

Call to Prayer:

Heavenly Father,

I admit my weaknesses. Lord, I ask You to lead me away from anything that would distract me from Your will and purpose for my life.

Lord, I need Your protection for my heart and mind, so that I may have the strength to say no to sin and yes to You.

Lord, I thank You because the Psalmist says You order my steps, and I trust You to do so. Please help me to be obedient and walk in the steps You have set for my life.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
