Blessed are Those Who Mourn

The Beatitudes list the attributes of those who are children of the Kingdom of Heaven (Matt. 5:11-12). They call us to seek humility, mercy, and righteousness, challenging us to shift our focus from worldly values to those of God.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”
Matthew 5:4
During our second week of meditating on the Beatitudes, we focus on the meaning of being “poor in spirit.”
Mourning is often viewed as a weakness in our world, and in the fast-paced lives we live, many do not take the time to mourn.
This beatitude speaks to our profound sense of loss and the sorrow we experience over the brokenness and pain in the world. Mourning brings us into a sacred space where God meets us in our suffering, comforting and healing us.
God promises that those who mourn will be comforted. The promise from God's Word serves as a gentle reminder that our sorrow will never be in vain; instead, it can lead to a closer walk with Him, helping us understand Him in a way we never knew before.
Call to intercession:
- Pray for those who are mourning so that they may find comfort in the Holy Spirit.
- Pray for those you know who are going through a season of grief.
- Pray for the families and others that God has placed into your life who have been deeply affected by a loss, whether it’s the death of a loved one, job loss, or relocation.
As you pray, reflect on your experiences of mourning and invite the Holy Spirit to bring healing and hope.
