Blessed are the Merciful

June 12, 2025

The Beatitudes list the attributes of those who are children of the Kingdom of Heaven (Matt. 5:11-12). They call us to seek humility, mercy, and righteousness, challenging us to shift our focus from worldly values to those of God.

This week, we’re focusing on Matthew 5:7

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
Matthew 5:7

Mercy is a characteristic of God, exemplifying divine compassion that comforts and forgives.

Jesus calls us to practice mercy in our relationships with others. Offering mercy is a decision of the heart that motivates us to be kind, gentle, and merciful, even toward people who don’t deserve it.

As we extend mercy, we display the love of God to a world in need and set ourselves up to be blessed by the Lord as we receive mercy in our own lives.

In Matthew 5:7, we are called to look beyond ourselves and be a source of grace in a world that hungers for the same.

Call to intercession:

  • Pray for a heart of mercy.
  • Ask God to open your eyes to see how you can show mercy every day.
  • As you pray, think about the grace and mercy of God in your own life and consider how you can extend that to others.

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for teaching us to show love, mercy, and forgiveness to ourselves and others.

Lord, we confess that this is not how we often feel or act, and we ask for your forgiveness for not exemplifying you.

Lord Jesus, work in our hearts to help us be intentional in showing mercy to others.

Thank you, Lord, for hearing us and working in our hearts so that we may exemplify you.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
